AC FFC Tidbit of the Week for October 23, 2022: Know When to Step Away

Last week, we talked about how having a patient’s favorite staff member work one-on-one with them when behavioral issues arise can be effective. Sometimes though, even that strategy doesn’t work as well as we’d hope.

In those instances, when a patient with dementia may be especially agitated and pushing nurses and others away, it can be best to “let the candle burn out” as long as they are not posing a safety threat to themselves or others. Once things seem calmer, one person can re-approach the patient and see if things are better. In addition to this strategy occasionally being better for the patient, it can also save the staff from becoming increasingly frustrated.

Have a great week, and don’t forget to email us with how many night-time walkers you had this month for our Halloween “Crawl Through the Halls” contest!
