Ever get stressed out at work? Are you chuckling at the fact that we even asked you this ridiculous question? (If you are…you’re welcome! Laughing helps reduce feelings of stress!)
Here’s something to try when you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed: Think of someone in your life who is calm. We all know that one person who seems to take everything in stride and doesn’t let the small stuff—or the stuff that’s beyond their control—take over and affect their ability to prioritize and deal with the things they CAN control.
When you start to feel stressed and/or overwhelmed at work, take some slow, deep breaths (in through the nose, out through the mouth) and mimic the calm person you know in your life. Not only might this help you feel better, but it can improve your patient interactions too. People who have dementia will often mirror your demeanor, so if you appear calm and relaxed, they in turn may feel more calm and relaxed too!
